I have a problem with my end. There, I said it!
That part of my setup were my beautifully smooth new fly line connects to the leader has always plagued me with problems. I’ve tried different braided loops, different knots and different leaders but they’ve all created their own little problems. Not big problems, but big enough to be annoying. One issue I do find annoying is having an area of big loops and bands and knots that won’t run through the rod properly. If you’re fishing a long leader and need to bring line in so that the end of the fly line comes in through the eyes of the rod I find all the knots and loops and bands just snag and get caught. Very frustrating!
There must be a better way!
I recently bought a new Barrio fly line (more on that once I’ve used it!) and saw they also supplied braided loops to go with the lines but the only ones available were Roman Moser minicon loops. Why hadn’t I heard of these before! They’re about a fifth of the size of most other braided loops and the loop itself is very minimal. They really easy to attached – no doing a snake wriggle with your fingers and the line for 10 minutes – and the rubber tube is a nice red colour to act as an indicator.
Once they’re on and you attach the leader the transition between fly line and tippet material is very minimal and will hopefully mean no more snagging. Now I just need to find the perfect tapered leader. Once my Sportfish delivery arrives we shall hopefully find out.
